Making the best decision might be difficult due to the abundance of possibilities. Read on to know the essential factors to consider when choosing the Best Car Coach Rental in Guwahati. Determine Your Requirements Before diving into the selection process, take some time to evaluate your trip requirements. Consider factors such as the number of travellers, the duration of your stay, and the type of terrain you'll encounter. This evaluation will help you determine the ideal vehicle size, seating capacity, and any specific features you may require. Research Reputable Rental Companies Begin your search by identifying reputable car coach rental companies in Guwahati. Ask for recommendations from friends, family, or fellow travellers who have visited the region before. Assess Vehicle Fleet and Availability Check the rental company's website or contact their customer service to assess the variety and availability of vehicles. Ensure that they offer a range of car coach options suitable for your group size, including luxury coaches, mini buses, or standard coaches. Availability is crucial, especially during peak travel seasons, so book in advance to secure your desired vehicle. A reliable rental company will prioritize prompt communication, address any concerns, and assist in your journey.
Nongjrong View Point Nongjrong View Point is one of the less explored places of Meghalaya where travelers rarely visit. You will certainly be amazed by the spectacular view of the landscape of Nongjrong. It is a sunrise point where during early sunrise the valley of Nongjrong is covered with clouds. The river Umngot flows below the valley and the lush greenery over the mountains make this place a must visit for people traveling to Meghalaya. It is located approximately 30 km away from the sub-district headquarter Mawkynrew and around 60 km away from the district headquarter. From the base of the hilltop at Nongjrong, you can see the clouds like a long stretch of a white sea flowing endlessly over the magnificent green hills and valleys. Nongjrong Valley looks more beautiful when the sun approaches the horizon. Tourists from all over the world come to see the stunning sunrise view of Nongjrong from its hilltop where the clouds are below the hilltop and this view makes Nongjrong one of the must visit places in Meghalaya. If you venture till the corner of the hillock to get a closer sight of the clouds, you won’t be disappointed. Best time to visit Nongjrong is during November till February when the weather is pleasant and cold. During this time you will get the best view of the clouds at the valley. MAWPHANLUR Picturesque high-altitude meadows sprinkled with small lakes and cottages – that is one way to describe Mawphanlur. It is one of the Meghalaya’s little known secret. The village is also famous as the land of seven lakes. An overnight trip is recommended so you can enjoy the starlit skies and cool temperatures that come with the night time. The biggest visual attraction of Mawphanlur is the verdant scenery that would make a romantic poet gush. Think of chirping birds, the occasional wandering calf with a bell, and friendly canines frolicking on the grass. Your Mawphanlur journey can be an activity-filled trip. Kayaking facilities are available on some of the lakes while there are many large boulders around the place where you can try some of your climbing (and stumbling) skills. If you are a photography fanatic then the landscapes provide a great stage for some natural portraits. Hikers will enjoy the quiet environs of Mawphanlur – the walk to nearby Mawthadraishan is recommended. On clear days, one can marvel at the endless frontiers from this vantage point. Locals will tell you that on the most unclouded mornings, you can even catch a glimpse of the Eastern Himalayas with the Khasi hills and beyond them, the plains of Assam stretching on the foreground. Mawphanlur is all about losing yourself in the beauty of nature. Just walk up on the hills, sit on the corners of small lakes, walk through the beautiful patches of the trees and immerse yourself in a joy of the lifetime. Best time to visit – October to April is ideal. With upgraded lodging facilities, Mawphanlur can be termed a year-round destination since many come to see the rain swept landscapes during the monsoons. KREM PURI The longest sandstone caves in the world are located in the North East region, about 90 km from the pristine town of Shillong. The exact address would lead you to Meghalaya, East Khasi hill district of the village Laitsohum. Krem Puri is also known as the Fairy Cave. Despite being discovered as the longest sandstone caves in the whole world, Krem Puri is a prime location for discovering ancient fossils for which many cave experts come up here to indulge in excavations and to conduct studies. And with this new discovery, many more are touted to come by and experience the calm beauty of the longest sandstone caves in the world. And its total length is 24,583 meters. Entering through a small, narrow passage, one must crawl inwards. The hurdles to cross are many, including two huge boulders that can be crossed only by stepping over them or squeezing through sideways. It is best to plan all your visit to Krem Puri in the months of May to September every year. This is because of the pleasant weather that prevails in these months which will add to your sense of adventure. Krem Mawmluh Krem Mawmluh Cave,Cherrapunji is the fourth longest cave in the Indian subcontinent. Lt. Yule became the first British subject to explore Krem Mawmluh. The cave runs 7 km in length and is almost 10 feet above sea level. Inside the cave, one can find stalagmite structures and other rock formations that are known for their beauty. Around 4,200 years ago, the cave was used to document a 200-year drought that occurred just following the Ice Age. If you are an adventure seeker, then this landmark is definitely for you! As you step inside the cave, you will be wading through water. Most parts of the cave are extremely slippery, and especially during monsoon, the floor is almost submerged in water. Wading through the knee-deep water, you can feel the rush of adrenaline flowing through your body. The cave is too deep that contain of passages, calcite formations of various kinds, massive caverns, waist deep pools, few meters of belly crawl and few climbs. Also, only 1/4th of the cave receives the sunlight while the rest of the cave remains shrouded in the darkness. It takes around 3-4 hours to complete both the ways. If you are planning to visit the caves, it is suggested you hire a local guide from the city. It is also advisable to wear a helmet and proper boots as well as carry water inside. Mawryngkhang Trek Meghalaya is beyond beautiful. I am not speaking of the towns of Shillong and Cherrapunji. Even with the tourists pouring into these destinations, they are still charming and utterly gorgeous. I am talking about theRural Meghalaya, the places that are not usually visited by the general tourist. That Meghalaya is blessed with an abundance of rain and clouds, waterfalls, meandering rivers and wonderful people. The Bamboo Trail Meghalaya or Mawryngkhang Trek is the latest addition in the adventure activities in Meghalaya. Located in the Pynursla sub-division, the Khasi village Wahkhen lies on the popular Shillong to Dawki route. Pomlum village lies on this route from where you have to take a detour. At Pomlum, you will see a signboard that will point towards the right direction to take to reach Wahkhen village, about 7 km away. The trail runs along a mountain cliff along the Wahrew River until it reaches the top of a huge single rock, U Mawryngkhang. The huge rock stands tall amidst the river valley surrounded by forests commanding its mighty presence over the surroundings. The bamboo trial Meghalaya is not for the faint hearted. The Mawryngkhang Trek was opened to the public in 2016. The entire project was the effort and hard work of the villagers of Wahkhen. The entire bamboo trail has been constructed by the villagers without taking the help of the Government. Without taking any external help, the villagers constructed the multiple bridges made of bamboo and wooden ladders. These bridges were tied by cane ropes and only very few nails were used for the construction. This trek can be completed from Wahkhen to Mawryngkhang and back within just three to four hours. Of course, the time taken will also depend upon your physical fitness and the number of breaks you wish to take. The trek is not difficult at all. It is all about balancing your feet on the bamboo trail which is quite strongly built. Although if you are afraid of heights then you should not opt for this trek. There is a part that runs for about 10 minutes right at the edge of the cliff, due to which this trek is considered the scariest trek of Meghalaya. David Scott Trek One of the oldest trial of Meghalaya,David Scott Trek is an advanture filled ride through history. It is a part of a 100 kilometre trade route constructed during the British administration n India.Passing through the Eastern Khasi Hills, this trek spans a distance of 16 kilometres winding through mountains, valleys, forest and rivers.Dating back to the drawn of British colonialism in India it is one the rare preserved beauties of Meghalaya. At an altitude of 4,892 ft, David Scott trek passes through deep valleys with River Umiam flowing alongside. The trail stretches between two famous Khasi villages of Mawphlang and Lad Mawphlang. The hike itself will bring you close to one of the most revered indigenous landmarks of the Khasis – the Sacred Grove of Mawphlang. This primaeval forest is believed to be more than 800 years old, its ancientness juxtaposed with the pine groves and grassy meadows that dominate the rest of the landscape. Apart from its undisturbed natural beauty, it is also the place where many rites of the erstwhile Khasi royals were practised. The beauty of the trek lies in the fact that it can be done by people of all ages simply as a wonderful nature hike. Even beginners, children & old aged people can do David Scott trek flexibly on a shorter route. Untouched by urbanisation, David Scott trek makes for a wonderful hike for all nature lovers. Shilliang Jashar Shiliang Jashar is roughly at driving distance of 30 mins drive.(14.5 km.) . Shiliang Jashar is small village of approx. population of 1000 people.& approx. 150 houses. Its very interesting to observe local life here. While in Village, if one can manage to reach highest point in village from where village view can be see, from same point one also can see Bangladesh plains, as Shiliang Jashar also close to India Bangladesh Border. Further most interesting part of Shiliang Jashar is, its Crystal clear water stream & a beautiful bamboo bridge over it. From the village one has to do approx. 30 to 40 mins of downhill trek to reach to this beautiful crystal clear water stream. Trek route is not that difficult. After 40 mins of downhills trek, one come across beautiful bamboo bridge on wonderful crystal clear water stream, which give feel of very Authentic Beauty of Shiliang Jashar. The Bamboo Bridge is also very interesting to have close look of it. The way these big long bamboos are arched and put across two banks of the water stream. The horizontal arrangement of small bamboos across the widh and laying them all along the length. One of those I would like to mention here is Pengshohrew Fall. To reach this waterfall, one has to trek for 1.5 hrs from Shiliang Jashar Village. This fall is live mostly all through the year, of course it has much more water in rainy days than in summer. Its a very Beautiful to site the white Foggy water falling between kind of slit formed in Huge Vertical Rocks. And when the Sunlight fall on it, some time we can witness a beautiful rainbow too. On the surface where this water falls creates crystal clear Greenish Blue water pool. The place is dotted with cascading waterfalls and natural formations that offer an enthralling experience in the lap of nature and to promote the place, the villagers have taken up the initiative under the banner of Shiliang Jashar Eco-Tourism Cooperative Society with Larishisha Khongthohrem as the leader. Byrdaw Falls, Pomshutia At a distance of 23 km from Mawlynnong and 70 km from Shillong, Byrdaw Falls is a mesmerizing waterfall situated at Pomshutia village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Located on Shillong - Dawki Road, it is one of the beautiful waterfalls in East Khasi Hills and among the popular places to visit in Mawlynnong. Byrdaw Falls is a two tiered waterfall cascading down from a height of about 150 m into a pool below. The falls is breathtaking especially during the monsoon season. The falls has a very rare characteristics and its resemble to the cave-like structure where waterfalls is flowing. The people can safely walk from the cliff of the falls towards down the falls. The geographical landscape, the fresh air, the breeze and a distinguished characteristics make the falls unique and unparalleled feature among the rest. Better to take the guide while visiting the falls as it is a remote location. Od-Ringai Looking for a breathtaking natural wonder that will transport you to paradise? Look no further than OD Ringai, Meghalaya’s best-kept secret. With crystal clear waters stretching out as far as the eye can see, you won’t believe your luck when you experience this stunning natural infinity pool. Od-Ringai (Ghost Falling Falls) which is about 100 meters long and with a beautiful pool at the top of it, was discovered in the district. The waterfall is located at a place under Mawten village, 2 KMs from Mawkyrwat. The discovery of the pool and the waterfall has surprised even the local people of Mawkyrwat but the place is no stranger to anglers from the area especially those from Mawten village. It is a place they frequent but none of them have captured it in their cameras or taken videos. It takes about 1½ hours trekking from Mawten village to reach the beautiful pool at the top of the Od-Ringai Falls and about 2 hours to reach down to the waterfall. As if the Falls were not enough, another beautiful lake greets the visitors. It is called the Synrang Ringai Lake. From the pool on the top of the waterfall, one can see the green hills of the Riwar Sepngi. The discovery of the beautiful pool at the top of the Od-Ringai Falls and the presence of other tourist spots including Umngi River on the way to Mawkyrwat, the Hot Springs in Jakrem, Phlangjaud Cave in Rangmaw, Rilang viewpoint in Mawranglang, Synrang Mawrin in Mawten, Tynnai viewpoint in Tynnai village, Krem Mawtynhiang on the Iawpaw Hill in Nongnah village, Monoliths in Mawlangwir and other beautiful places, is bound to propel South West Khasi Hills district into the tourism map of Meghalaya and the world and this will definitely attract tourists both domestics and foreign, the local youth aver. Hence the message from these youths to the tourists including local, national and foreign is to maintain this beautiful place as a ‘plastic, bottle and other non-biodegradable wastes free zone’ so that its beauty will remain unsullied. Krem Chympe Krem Chympe is India’s 5th longest cave located in Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. It is situated at a walking distance of about 3 km approximately north along the track from the village of Khaddum to Sielkan. It is a magnificent river cave which would require over 3.5 km of swimming over a series of very large and deep lakes, formed by the existence of more than 50 natural dams or gours, 6 to 8 m high. The cave has a very large colony of bats and possibly cave-adapted fish. As you journey through the lush green forests of Meghalaya, one couldn't wait to explore the hidden secrets of Krem Chympe. The trek to the cave itself was a picturesque experience, walking along the track from the village of Khaddum to Sielkan, passing through local villages and soaking up the scenic beauty of the countryside. Upon reaching Krem Chympe, you will be awestruck by the sheer magnitude of the cave entrance. As you descend deeper into the cave, the air grew cool, and the sound of dripping water echoed through the chambers. The darkness was all-encompassing, and one could feel the weight of the earth above them. You will be struck by the unique and stunning rock formations adorning the cave walls. The stalactites and stalagmites looked like frozen waterfalls, glittering in the light of my torch. The colors were a natural wonder, ranging from dark earthy tones to shimmering golds and whites. Krem Chympe is also a sanctuary for various species of flora and fauna, including bats, spiders, and crickets. The eerie silence of the cave was occasionally broken by the chirping of insects and the fluttering of bat wings. Wah Rilang View Point Wah Rilang view point also called the green desert as the hills surrounding the river looks like sand dunes covered with green forest. 5km from Mawkyrwat at Mawranglang is a beautiful valley on the Nongstoin - Mawkyrwat road meandering across the river. It is convenient picnic and angling spot. The view point is just relaxing and with the fresh air around. Wah Rilang is a small village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India. The town is known for its scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage. One should stop at the view point while traveling to Mawkyrwat. This romantic view of the nature can give anyone the sense of awe and wonder. Wah Rilang River gets merged with Um Rilang and later connects with Kynshi River and enters Bangladesh.

Wei Sawdong Waterfall The name Wei Sawdong derives from the Khasi language (wei - resembling a pool, sawdong - square-shaped), spoken locally. Wei Sawdong is difficult to access, and the trek to the waterfall is along an out-and-back trail and challenging. The falls are especially known for their bluish-green, crystal-clear water. The fall is situated some 60 km southwest of Shillong in East Khasi Hills district. It is a one and half hours drive from Shillong to Wei Saw dong waterfall. To witness the falls, which is beautiful beyond expression, you will have to pass a not-so-intense physical ability test. You will need to trek 200 meters stretch of almost a 75 to 90-degree angle. The villagers have made the path using bamboo trees, and so we would suggest you wear shoes which has an excellent grip. You can divide the trek to the falls in two parts. The first is the easier makeshift stairs that are steep with mountains at both sides of the trail. Stop for some time at the end of the course, to get to soak in the landscapes from the viewpoint. The second part of the trek leads you to the makeshift unstable bamboo ladders against a mountain rock. Here you will have to climb down one person at a time. Watch your steps as the ladder is muddy and greasy, and one wrong step could lead to an accident. However, the trek will seem all worth when you witness a three-step roaring waterfall welcoming you the end of the stairs. A sense of accomplishment will fill you when you catch the serenity of nature and the wilderness of the falls. Climbing up can get your heart racing, so be sure you do it slowly. Elephant Falls Named after an Elephant like stone at its foot, the Elephant Falls are amongst the most popular falls in the North-East, situated next to Shillong. It is a tourists' paradise with three layers of the falls accessible to the layman from different vantage points. The Britishers named this fall so owing to the presence of an elephant-shaped rock on one side of the fall. However, the stone disintegrated and was washed away due to an earthquake in 1897. Elephant Waterfalls is a superb place for spending some time in the midst of nature while capturing the incredible moments for your keepsake. The local name of the elephant falls is ‘Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew’, meaning ‘The Three Step Waterfalls’, as the falls consist of three amazing falls in the sequence. The first of which is tucked between the intense trees which are very thick and wide. The second waterfall consists of slim thread of water, it is more or less insignificant in winter season due to lack of rainfalls. The third waterfall which is the best of the three and the biggest with constant gush of water flowing making it look like a huge amount of milk flowing instead of water on the black rocks at the back. The third waterfall attracts people towards it due to its thick and milky water body. Due to its spectacular surroundings, the elephant falls tops the list of tourist attractions and weekend getaways in Shillong. The climate of this place is rejuvenating and revitalizing. Elephant Waterfalls may be visited at any time of the year. Even when the water levels drop a little in the winter, the waterfalls retain their allure. The months immediately following the monsoon are the greatest since the water is at its most powerful and the scenery generated is something to remember for a long time. While the terrain, which is studded with streams and falls, may encourage you to take one of the numerous hiking paths, the sights will keep you busy taking shots, with the Elephant Falls being a popular spot for photographers. It is said to be one of the best places to go during a Shillong sightseeing tour. Nohkalikai Waterfalls The waterfall is ranked as the fourth highest in the world. The fall is one of the most famous attractions in Cherrapunjee, and the water flows from 1,100 feet tall. Because Nohkalikai Falls is a rain-fed waterfall, you can see its true beauty and feel the force of the waterfall even from a distance during the monsoon season. The route to the falls takes you through an elevated plateau that leads to the rock face and provides views of the ultramarine pool. The journey to the falls is through an elevated plateau that leads to the rock face and witnesses the viewpoint of the ultramarine pool. Nohkalikai Falls plays a role in a dramatic legend with a truly heartbreaking and terrible story that led to its christening. Nohkalikai literally translates to “Jump of Ka Likai” wherein ‘Noh’ means jump, ‘Ka’ is a prefix used for a female, and ‘Likai’ is the name of the Khasi woman behind the ghastly legend. The waterfall is a delight for nature lovers and adventure buffs. Some popular activities that you can engage in here include: Trekking: Adventurers will enjoy a trek here through dense forests, lush grassland, clear streams, and a river bed with huge boulders. The Nohkalikai Falls trek may take about 4-5 hours, depending on your speed and the weather. Birdwatching: You can spend some time spotting different types of birds here. Photography: If you are into nature or landscape photography, you can capture some scenic panoramas here. Shopping: The locals sell home-grown cinnamon sticks, bay leaves and other products near Nohkalikai Waterfall at reasonable prices. Traditional handicrafts and souvenirs are also available at the shops in the vicinity. Nohsngithiang Falls Northeast India has not only the seven sister states, but is also home to the Seven Sisters Waterfalls. This sounds quite intriguing as this waterfall also enjoys the reputation of being the fourth highest waterfalls in India. Also known as Nohsngithiang Falls, Seven Sister Falls is located around 1 km south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district, i.e., in Meghalaya. Going by its name or, say, justifying its name, Seven Sisters Waterfalls has seven different waterfalls that are strategically arranged side by side on a high, rugged cliff, and looks very significant even from a distance. It is interesting to note that as this waterfall plunges down in seven stages, it derived its name from this fact. The view, in fact, makes for a captivating view when it rains and the entire region comes alive. Located in the wettest place on Earth, Cherrapunjee, Nohsngithiang Falls is a seven segmented waterfall that cascades down from a height of 315 m (1,033 feet) and has an average width of 70 m (230 feet). The falls plunges over the top of limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills only during the rainy season. The seven segments of the waterfalls symbolize the seven sister states in northeast namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya. The best time to visit this place is during the monsoon, when the streams are flooded with water and flow down rapidly forming a perennial rainbow, which gives the spectacular views for the tourists. One can get the magnificent view of the falls from the viewpoint situated at Mawsmai village as there is no possibility to get into the water. Tourist can also view the falls from the Eco Park which has been constructed on a plateau on top of the falls. Phe Phe Falls The Phe Phe falls distance from Shillong is about 80 km and takes around 2.5 hours to reach. By Jowai-Dawki Road, this campsite located beside a river provides the best facilities. Not only does it have unique miniature huts and cabins but also cottages for a comfy stay. There is an abundance of space for pitching tents as well. Paradise Adventure Camp and Phe Phe Waterfall are located in the Shkentalang Village near Jarain in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. Phe Phe Falls is a two-tier waterfall. Phe Phe is a Jaintia word that translates to Paradise (Jaintia is one of the major ethnic groups of Meghalaya). The location of the waterfall makes it more thrilling. Descending a steep hill, through the shrub bamboo plants, the sight of the waterfall in the backdrop of the blue sky and the range of hills layered with light and shadow on the other side, we entered the realm of paradise. The waterfall has its own charm and essence. The water is as blue as the sky, clean transparent and above all cold. Plunging into these waters and refreshing ourselves was a pure delight. With feet immersed in these chilling waters, and eyes closed, the sensation of a sprinkling of water from the Fall touching the skin gave us a strange kind of peace. The trek to Phe Phe Falls in Meghalaya takes hardly around 25 to 30 minutes to reach the main waterfall. Make sure you don’t stop at the first tier of the waterfall. Krang Suri Falls Krang Shuri is blessed with shimmering blue waters and sparkling sunlight. This heady mixture of nature is sometimes known to create a rainbow. It's truly a magical pool in nature's wonderland. Krang Suri is located on the other side of the state and takes a while to get to. It is 91 kms from Shillong and typically should take 2.5 hours according to Google. Compared to the cliff-hugging plunge falls that you will find in Southern Meghalaya, the Krang shuri waterfall features a different aesthetic. A placid river suddenly drops, creating a curtain of flowing water that falls over a cave. The walk down to Krang shuri is a pleasant descent – you begin on an open meadow and slowly climb down into more defined shrub and vegetation. There are railings around the falls where you can get a good view and you can also inquire about the boating facilities there. Upstream is a small space where people can camp, surrounded by lush green vegetation and with the gentle ripple of the river for company. Getting there – The 90-km drive to Krang shuri from Shillong via the NH6 and NH206 is a riveting one – highways looping around the gentle hills, punctuated by hamlets and small towns. There are plenty of eating choices for those who are ready to try local food. Kynrem Waterfalls At a distance of 17 km from Cherrapunji, Kynrem Waterfalls is a stunning falls located near Cherrapunji in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Situated inside the Thangkharang Park, it is the 7th highest waterfalls in India and among the popular places to visit in Cherrapunji. Falling from a height of about 305 m (1,001 feet), Kynrem Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in Meghalaya that cascades in three levels from the top of a hill. Like many other waterfalls of the region, the Kynrem Falls, too, flow in their full swing only during the months of Monsoon, and it is thus recommended to visit the falls just during Monsoon. Usually, the tourists can get the best views of this waterfalls from a lookout deck within the Thangkharang Park, which was a peaceful little botanical garden containing some benches and picnic areas for relaxing. Situated 7 km further down from Thangkharang, there is a viewpoint on the road connecting Cherrapunji to Bangladeshi Border offers yet another spectacular view of the three levels of the fall as well as the water flowing down under the bridge in all its grandeur. Dainthlen Falls Dainthlen is one of the most powerful sights you will come across, a gushing waterfall that cuts through the hard rocks and the high plateau of Sohra before it cascades down into lush forests. It is also a culturally significant place for the Khasi tribe. According to local folktales, this spot is where a great battle was fought. The Thlen was a giant serpent, an embodiment of evil who was finally vanquished by the local residents of an ancient village that is now Sohra. A few minutes of careful walk is required to reach the iron fence from where one will able to witness the gushing waterfall. There was no proper road to reach the viewpoint, it was bit tricky to step on the rocks and avoid the mud. For the best view of Dainthlen, one should cross the stream to the other side. This is only possible when water level is low. There is also an old bridge over the stream which acts as a perfect background for pictures. Rainbow Falls Rainbow Waterfalls is a stunning waterfall located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India. The falls get their name from the rainbow that is often visible above the cascading water, creating a truly mesmerizing sight. To reach Rainbow Waterfalls, visitors must trek for approximately 2 km from the nearby village of Nongriat. The trek itself is a beautiful experience, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Along the way, visitors can stop to admire the natural beauty of the region, including the majestic root bridges that are a unique feature of this area. Once visitors reach the waterfall, they are greeted with the sight of water cascading down from a height of approximately 100 meters into a pool below. The falls are surrounded by lush green forests, adding to the charm of this natural wonder. Visitors can also take a dip in the natural pool formed at the base of the falls, providing a refreshing break from the trek. In addition to its natural beauty, Rainbow Waterfalls also have cultural significance. The falls are considered sacred by the local Khasi people, and visitors can learn about the local culture and traditions while enjoying the beauty of the waterfall. Tyrshi Falls Locate just 20 kms South of Nartiang at National Highway 6 (Shillong – Jowai Hightway), Tyrshi Falls Locate just 20 kms South of Nartiang at National Highway 6 (Shillong – Jowai Hightway), Tyrshi Falls Locate just 20 kms South of Nartiang at National Highway 6 (Shillong – Jowai Hightway), Tyrshi Falls It is an unsung fall in Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya state. A pretty arch bridge connects across an expanse of green paddy fields, which opens up to the gushing Tyrshi falls thundering down to the Pynthor (paddy-fields) below. A winding footpath offering a breathtaking and panoramic view of the Pynthor Nein, eases your trek down to the bottom of the falls, which glides down like milk over a vertical drop. One can get down on the road and take a small walk to Tyrshi Falls. A hike through paddy fields alongside a gently flowing stream takes you to this beautiful and serene place. One should go below through further down steps and enjoy the water. As Elephant Falls you can reach at the base of Tyrshi Falls and feel the verve of water. This place is truly a heaven for nature lovers and people seeking for isolated peaceful destinations. Best Time to visit: Monsoon is the best time to visit Tyrshi Falls to enjoy the full current white water, flowing down the rocks. But one should come with good shoes as path can be muddy and rocks near falls are very slippery. There is no dustbin available at the site; hence visitors should not litter the waste near waterfall, as it ruins the ecosystem as well as beauty of place.

Imbibing this wisdom, the festival is designed around sustainable principles that the community has been practising for generations. The fest has, therefore, always leaned towards being green, capping visitors to 10,000, banning single-use plastic, and being extremely conscious about its carbon footprint in this ecologically sensitive zone. The organisers use repurposed bamboo, locally and abundantly grown, along with oak and pine wood for the handcrafted structures, including the stages. This is combined with upcycled cloth buntings and bamboo light fixtures for décor. Most of the material used to construct the stages is recycled from the previous editions of the fest, including the flattened bamboo, Yamio, which is woven to make the walls. The signages, too, are crafted from reclaimed wood and done up with eco-friendly paint to reduce plastic pollution from flex hoardings. Ziro Festival puts up waste segregation pits and distributes biodegradable garbage bags for revellers to dispose of waste. They also organise waste-collection drives with its partners and local volunteers, from women and youth associations, to keep the venue clean at all times. And when the festival winds up, they make sure that the spaces are back to their naturally beautiful self. Where is Ziro Music Festival Celebrated? Ziro is a town in the Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh. The picturesque beauty of the city surrounded by majestic mountains is spellbinding. The welcoming and warm Apatani tribe, the splendid scenery, the charming villages, rivers, rice fields, and landscapes set Ziro Valley apart. It has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO lately. This year, festival-goers will experience a kaleidoscope of sounds, rhythms, and performances across three captivating stages: The Danyi (Sun) Stage, Pwlo (Moon) Stage, and the all-new Takvr (Star) Stage dedicated to electronic music. Apart from these, the Popi Sarmiñ Creative Space will also host a variety of community engagement initiatives. Artist line-up Ziro Music Festival 2023 Danyi (Sun) Stage Danyi (Sun) Stage's artist lineup includes classical music performers such as Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Indian Hindustani classical Jal Tarang artist Shashikala Dani, noted Carnatic flautist Sikkil Mala Chandrasekar, and Joydeep Mukherjee, among others. Popular Indian singer Mohit Chauhan and popular Arunachali singer Chorun Mugli are also set to take the stage by storm. The artist lineup for Internationally acclaimed artists includes Indonesian troubadour Ary Juliyant, South African guitarist Guy Buttery, and the sensational folk duo Puuluup from Estonia. Pwlo (Moon) Stage Pwlo (Moon) Stage's artist lineup includes Farhan Akhtar’s band Farhan Echoes, Arunachali indie pop sensation Taba Chake, popular rapper MC Altaf, and returning international artists including rock legend Lee Ranaldo and multi award winners Antikvariniai Kašpirovskio Dantys from Lithuania. The lineup also includes Australian punk rockers Mannequin Death Squad fresh off their UK tour, the inimitable Swedish act – The Boo Boo Bama Orchestra at the tail end of their summer tour, Indian music producer and commercial success Komorebi, and Chaar Diwaari who has been shaking up the Delhi underground scene, and many more. Takvr Stage The Takvr Stage is a new addition curated by India’s leading electronic artist, Sapta aka Marti Bharath. It will feature an exceptional lineup of leading DJs and music producers from across the globe. The lineup includes a host of homegrown talents like Kissnuka aka Anushka Manchanda, Nagaland’s premier DJ and producer Ina, Deep Brown, Smokey Sound and Unnayana among others. International acts include the well-known Angata (Israel), Sebastian Fuchs (Germany) and Lithuanian producer Leon Somov who returns to Ziro this year. Prepare to dance the night away in this immersive electronic playground. Besides the music, you get a chance to explore the traditional arts and crafts, engage in community learning workshops and immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Apatani tribe. Look out for painting and crafts workshops, yoga, meditation, dance and movement sessions, and learn how to play the indigenous Apatani flute (elu) made from paddy straw. You could also participate in Signature Masterclasses, which will include the likes of celebrity mixologist Yangdup Lama fashioning cocktails out of local ingredients. Outside of the festival, sign up for a guided tour of an Apatani village, which would include an ethnic meal, or indulge in a winery tour of Naara-Aaba in Hong village, which is India’s first brand of kiwi wine (featured on Season 2 of Shark Tank India). There are several majestic waterfalls and paddy-fish farms you can visit. Some 6km from Ziro’s main market Hapoli is the Shri Sidheshwar Nath Temple, built around the world’s tallest, naturally formed Shivling. Photographers love the view from the Kile Pakho ridge, with a plateau on one side and the snow-clad Himalayan range, Nyime Pembu, on the other. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, head to the Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary to try and spot clouded leopards, black giant squirrels, the Indian muntjac, or the Asian palm civet. Birders have a chance to spot the black eagle, collared owlet, golden-breasted fulvetta, and many other species here. Before you travel, Indians need an Inner Line Permit from Arunachal Tourism’s dedicated site, arunachalilp.com; a 14-day e-permit costs Rs100. NRIs, OCI-holders and foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit from the Foreign Regional Registration Office. What to eat and drink at Ziro The festival ground has plenty of stalls that sell everything from fries and burgers to pasta. But while you’re in Arunachal Pradesh, you’ll want to sample the local fare, much of which is centred around the use of bamboo, fermentation, boiling and steaming. Vegetarians can try bamboo shoots with rice, or rely on universal staples such as rice and dal with locally grown vegetables. Ziro residents are happy to customise dishes to suit a vegetarian or vegan diet. Fish is a popular item on the Apatani menu, as they practise a unique blend of rice farming and aquaculture called paddy-fish cultivation. If you eat meat, then you can try the Apatani delicacies of roasted and boiled pork in bamboo stem, beef stew or roast. Roasted grasshoppers make for a great snack on the go. The local drink is Apong, brewed from rice or millets. It’s called beer but is more like wine. They also have delicious apple or kiwi wine. Incidentally, the state is India’s largest producer of kiwis, and the entire production is certified organic as the Apatani don’t use any chemical fertilisers and pesticides in their farming.

Back in 2015, I started dreaming about backpacking across Northeast India. My friend Arunabh and I used to tag each other on photos of wild places Dzukou Valley, those famous Living Root Bridges always promising we’d go together someday. In June 2015, we finally did it. We packed our bags and headed off to Meghalaya for our first real adventure. We didn’t bother with strict plans or detailed schedules. We just decided to figure things out as we went, letting the road set the pace. I’d been to Meghalaya once before, but that was for a leadership program. This time, I wanted to see Shillong and beyond on my own terms. Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong – The Adventure Begins We started out in Guwahati, hopping a ride to Shillong. The cab dropped us near Police Bazaar—the city’s busy center. Instead of Google Maps, we used a pocket-sized foldout map from Meghalaya Tourism. It made us feel like actual explorers, not just tourists following a checklist. Hostels were all full, so we found a no-frills hotel on Quinton Road. We barely knew how to get around, so we hired a cab and set off to see what Shillong had to offer. The weather couldn’t have been better—cloudy, breezy, no rain. First up was Elephant Falls. The water was roaring, and the whole place looked alive. Then we headed to Shillong Peak, the highest point in town, about 1,948 meters up. When the clouds finally broke, the view just opened up—panoramic, endless. We squeezed in a quick visit to the Air Force Museum and caught a glimpse of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians before calling it a day. Day 2: Mawlynnong, Living Root Bridge & Seven Sisters Falls The next morning, we set off for Mawlynnong, known as Asia’s Cleanest Village since 2003. The place is spotless—bamboo bins everywhere, not a plastic bag in sight, and everyone pitches in to keep things that way. A quick drive brought us to the Riwai Living Root Bridge, which people usually just call the Mawlynnong Root Bridge. It’s woven right out of living rubber tree roots—a crazy mix of nature and human effort. Hardly anyone else was there, so it felt peaceful, almost like we’d stumbled into a secret. We pushed on toward Sohra (Cherrapunji). Fog swallowed the road, clouds drifted next to us, and the hills looked unreal. At Mawkdok Dympep Valley, we stopped for tea and stared down into the gorge. By evening, we rolled into Sohra and checked into a simple riverside resort. Later, we wandered over to Seven Sisters Falls. Just as we arrived, the clouds pulled back, and there it was—the waterfall in full flow, and even the plains of Bangladesh off in the distance. Day 3: Caves, Waterfalls & Misty Mornings in Sohra Nothing beats waking up to drizzle, mist, and the sound of water rushing somewhere outside. Even with the low visibility, we grabbed a cab and went out to see more: Mawsmai Cave, Thangkharang Park, Arwah Cave, and Nohkalikai Falls. Mawsmai Cave was wild—lit tunnels, weird rock shapes. Arwah Cave felt even more adventurous: fossils in the walls, streams running through, sunlight squeezing in wherever it could. Nohkalikai Falls stole the show. It’s one of the tallest waterfalls in India, plunging 340 meters straight down. We ended up kicking a football around with some local kids—not planned, just one of those good moments that happen when you travel. Instead of shelling out for another cab, we hopped a public bus back to Shillong. It wasn’t glamorous, but it felt real—like we were actually part of the place for a minute. Why I Keep Thinking About Backpacking Meghalaya tour What sticks with me most is the freedom. We could stop where we wanted, talk to anyone, just slow down and take it all in. Traveling that way—on your own schedule, meeting locals, soaking up the little things—makes the memories stronger. If you’re into a more comfortable trip, Assam Meghalaya Tour Packages are out there. They bundle the culture of Guwahati with the wild beauty of Shillong and Sohra. We wrapped up our trip with a big Khasi meal in Shillong. That was the perfect ending to a trip I’ll never forget. FAQs: Places to Visit in Meghalaya Top places in Shillong? Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Don Bosco Museum, Ward’s Lake, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Laitlum Grand Canyon. Best spots in Cherrapunji (Sohra)? Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Arwah Cave, Double Decker Living Root Bridge. How to reach Meghalaya? Shillong Airport is about 30 km from the city. Guwahati’s LGBI Airport is the closest international airport.
